Cheers Seamus - just keep on writing them!

James

Read Zipf's "The Theory of least Effort." What Zipf is explaining is how we use tools. That the easier and the more accessible a tool is the more we will use it. He starts off the testing his theory by analysing by hand the word frequency in Ulysses. Long book, many words....

Zipf's theory applies to the new area of Attention, as the "The Theory of least Effort" says that people will use media that is the easiest and most accessible to use. The theory is how we chose tools, and the frequency we use them (Zipf's law) , not how often the tool is used by the population as a whole. The Internet is more accessible than say a newspaper then more people will gravitate to the new medium, even if the new medium is not as high quality of the previous one. A good example would be the Records being replaced by CD's, being replaced by MP3. Each is lower quality than the next, but each is more accessible.

James - thanks, I'll give it a look.
