Dilbert's idea is interesting and appeals to me emotionally, although the commenters to his blog post also raise valid reasons why it might not work, or indeed encourage war.

If you take the EU as a succesful war-avoidance model (I'd find it pretty difficult to go to war with Bulgarians, even though I don't know any Bulgarians personally), a related idea could be for everyone to join a virtual world. Then we would all belong to an overarching invisible something, like we all belong to the EU. Ironically, most of the big virtual worlds are all about war :)

Sorry, no real insight in this comment, but just to say an excellent excellent little post. I like the way it ties in modern art with social networking with global politics with a genuine idea to make a small improvement to the world - and I closely relate to both London and New York too.
